Fundamental to the region's development model

Food planning is going to become more important in land-use planning and development policies throughout the Lisbon metropolitan area.

The Área Metropolitana de Lisboa has therefore produced a document (in Portuguese and English) that summarizes the strategic framework of FoodLink - a network for food transition in the Lisbon metropolitan area - its integration into the matrix of the Lisbon 2030 Regional Strategy, and the importance of the agri-food sector as a pillar of the Lisbon 2030 Intelligent Specialization Strategy (RIS3 2030).

As well as outlining the food transition in the Lisbon metropolitan area, the document also covers Foodlink's vision, commitments and guiding principles, and its three strategic axes (planning the territory for the food transition; the food transition as a vector for socio-territorial cohesion; and empowering and educating for the food transition) and their respective objectives.

Metropolitan food working group

In January 2024, the Lisbon Metropolitan Area created a metropolitan working group on food, which brings together elected representatives, leaders and technicians from the region's 18 municipalities.

The creation of this group comes in recognition of the importance of the food system for the development of the region and its ability to respond to the new challenges facing the entire territory.
