A journey through the region's heritage
A remarkable fountain that goes unnoticed in the hustle and bustle of the city, a necropolis that dates back to the end of the Neolithic period, fortifications that have defended us for centuries, traditional boats that are the pride of the riverside peoples, castles, palaces and estates that were the birthplaces of kings and queens, temples that tell the story of the Portuguese people over the centuries, murals that fill our cities with color and life? All this, and much more, made up the substance of a free course, with no pre-requisites, that AML made available to all those who wanted to learn more about the region's tangible and intangible heritage of great architectural and artistic value.
Eighteen of the region's heritage icons are shown, one for each municipality in the Lisbon metropolitan area, with videos and texts revisiting some episodes in Portugal's history, architectural features and other curiosities. The course also takes a contemporary look at one of the region's emerging art forms, urban art.
Alcochete Mother Church, Casa da Cerca, Carenque Necropolis, Santa Maria Church, Santa Marta Fort, Largo do Carmo Fountain, Santa Iria de Azóia Mother Church, Mafra National Palace, traditional Tagus boats, Montijo Parish Church / Divino Espírito Santo Church, Dom Dinis Monastery, São Julião da Barra Fort, Palmela Castle, Quinta da Fidalga, Santiago Fort, São Filipe de Setúbal Fort, Queluz National Palace and the Lines of Torres Vedras, as well as countless urban art murals, make up the totality of the heritage covered in the course.
The course "Architectural Heritage and Urban Art" was available free of charge on the NAU digital platform until April 2023, in a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) approach, which is a type of open course, in a virtual learning environment, aimed at a large number of students, and which represents an unprecedented approach by an inter-municipal institution to this type of learning.
It can be done at the pace of each participant, in a cultural journey that takes a total of around five hours. At the end of each training unit, there was a moment of evaluation through quizzes.
A new edition of the course is planned, using the same model.
