Platform at the service of physical activity
Assuming that the practice of physical activity and sport, aimed at all citizens, is recognized as fundamental for maintaining health and an essential means of education and citizenship training, AML has developed the Metropolitan Observatory for Sport and Physical Activity.
The digital platform, which is the result of a process of construction and coordination between the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, its 18 municipalities and the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of the Lusófona University of Humanities and Technology, paints a picture of the territory, based on a wide range of up-to-date indicators, and is an important tool in the service of better policies for sport and physical activity throughout the metropolitan region.
The observatory's main objectives are to produce an up-to-date analysis of the sporting reality in the metropolitan region and to build a tool to support decision-making and the definition of land management strategies, combining multiple dimensions of intervention with the different agents working in the field.
Its three pillars are the analysis of the supply of sports infrastructures, the comparative analysis of participation in physical and sporting activities and the characterization and diagnosis of the supply of these activities.
The first phase involved surveying the situation and building the technological infrastructure to support the data. The next phase was the creation of the database and the development of the observatory's portal. The third phase was the start of the portal's operation, with public access, and the fourth served to present and publicize the portal and to carry out monitoring, adjustment and updating work.
Since its launch in May 2021, the Observatory has been an essential tool for promoting metropolitan sports culture.
