AML marks the 50th anniversary of April 25 with a tribute to the region's mayors since the first local elections

The Lisbon Metropolitan Area will hold a ceremony to pay tribute to all the mayors of its 18 municipalities, from the first local elections in December 1976 to the present term.

The initiative, part of AML's celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of democracy in Portugal, will take place on April 18, starting at 2:30pm, at the Cineteatro D. João V, in Amadora.

A total of 105 presidents will be honored, 33 posthumously.

The ceremony to commemorate the mayors will include cultural moments with Teresa Salgueiro (ex-Madredeus), Almada Street Band and Pedro Freitas, the Poet of the City.

A short, unseen film on the importance of 50 years of local government will also be shown.

Building April in 2024, on the anniversary we are celebrating 50 years later, is a path that we continue to cement because, more than a date, April 25 is the conquest of values, ideals and solutions. It is an immense yearning for freedom and democracy.

Other initiatives are planned as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of April 25, which will be announced soon.

The importance of local governance

The 25 April 1974 made democracy, development, decolonization and freedom possible.

On December 12, 1976, for the first time in the country's history, local representatives were chosen directly by the population, through direct and universal suffrage. The conditions for exercising the powers and competences of autonomous local government were enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.

Good local governance, transparency and effective citizen participation are principles and guidelines of democracy, particularly in today's times, where the complexity of problems, the broadening of municipalities' areas of intervention, the need for citizen involvement and participation require the adoption of different forms of collaboration and intervention on the part of all the actors involved.

Local governance continues to present a number of extremely demanding challenges, but they also represent an opportunity to find better responses to social concerns, with a view to continuously improving people's living conditions and developing citizenship, while also adjusting to new realities, with different strategic thinking and attitudes.
